s the summer comes to an end, it’s important for parents to prioritize their children’s safety when traveling to and from school. The South Jordan Police Department wants to help you and your children stay safe this school year by offering up some safety tips.
Safe Walking Routes
The Jordan School District, in collaboration with the City of South Jordan, has established Safe Walking Routes for many schools in our area. These routes are carefully selected to provide the safest paths for children to walk to school. Most routes have crossing guards stationed at specific points along the way. To find the designated Safe Walking Route for your child’s school, please consult the school administration or visit the school’s website.
Walking to School
When your child starts walking to school, it’s a good idea to accompany them a few times to ensure they are familiar with the route. Encourage your child to use the sidewalk if one is available. In cases where there is no sidewalk, it’s safer for them to walk facing oncoming traffic. Teach your child to use crosswalks whenever possible and to always look both ways, twice, before crossing the street. Remind them to make eye contact with drivers to ensure they are seen. Moreover, advise them to stay attentive to their surroundings and avoid distractions while walking.
Riding a Bike, Scooter, or Skateboard to School
If your child rides a bike, scooter, or skateboard to school, instruct them to ride on the side of the road that aligns with the flow of traffic. When crossing a street, teach them to come to a complete stop and walk their bike, scooter, or skateboard across safely. It’s essential for your child to wear a proper helmet for protection. Emphasize the importance of staying alert and avoiding distractions while riding.
Taking the Bus to School
To ensure a safe bus journey, accompany your child to the bus stop initially to familiarize them with the proper waiting spot and the process of getting on and off the bus safely. Advise your child to maintain a distance of at least six feet from the curb while waiting for the bus. Additionally, instruct them to wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before approaching it.
Driving to School
Parents play a crucial role in establishing good driving habits for new drivers. Be a positive example by driving the way you want your teenager to drive. It’s important to note that car accidents are the leading cause of death among teenagers, primarily due to their lack of experience. Even after obtaining their driver’s license, it’s beneficial to continue driving with your teen. Encourage them to take the 4S pledge (Slow down, Stop, Seatbelt, Stay off your phone) to contribute to a safer South Jordan.
