As Fire Prevention Week approaches, the South Jordan Fire Department reminds residents to remember this year message of "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
The South Jordan Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 100 years of Fire Prevention in the United States. This year's Fire Prevention Week is from October 6-12, 2024. We want to educate the public on the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.
According to the NFPA, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are the first line of defense in a home fire but must be checked frequently to ensure they are working appropriately.
South Jordan Fire Department wants to share some essential safety tips supporting this year's message to Install, Test, and Replace smoke alarms to “Make them work for you!”
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month pushing the test button.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or stop responding when tested.
Please make sure that smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
