[ARCHIVED] Mayor's Corner: A New South Jordan Senior Center

Last month we shared exciting news that the new South Jordan Senior Center will be built at The District, in the southwest corner that is currently empty. To our seniors, you are the heart of this community. You’ve built the neighborhoods, the schools, the parks, the traditions, and it’s only fitting that we now build something for you.

We have a very active senior community and a wonderful senior committee here in the city. Our South Jordan Community Center has also served as our South Jordan Senior Center for many years, but it was never built with that purpose in mind. Visitors make good use of the space and adapt with creativity to make it work. They also exercise patience when the facility is used for a variety of other events, but the need for a purpose-built senior center has existed for a very long time. After many hours (over several years) of thoughtful planning, collaboration, and community feedback, I’m thrilled that this vision is becoming a reality.

The new Senior Center, which will be about 17,000 square feet and designed specifically for seniors, will include versatile activity spaces, art and fitness rooms, a commercial-style kitchen for meal programs, and accessible parking. Next door, about 200 senior housing units, the majority meeting affordable housing guidelines, will provide options for residents who wish to remain in South Jordan as their housing needs change.

This project is about more than just a building. It’s about connection and community. It’s about ensuring that those who helped build South Jordan can continue to thrive here, close to friends and family. It’s also about thoughtful city planning, which means creating a development that supports local businesses and keeps our city’s core vibrant throughout the week. When seniors live, gather, and shop at The District, they bring steady, positive energy that strengthens the entire community.

This effort reflects what’s best about South Jordan: vision, commitment, and partnership. And it’s not being paid for with general fund tax dollars. We have been saving redevelopment money, little by little, for several years in order to do a significant project like this. I’m deeply grateful for the collaboration of our City Council, dedicated staff, and our partners at Ivory Innovations, Call to Action, and The Boyer Company, who share our belief that senior spaces and housing should be both innovative and affordable. We also appreciate the cooperation of The District tenants, including Target and JCPenney, who have worked alongside us to bring this project to life.

Construction could begin as early as 2026, marking a new chapter for South Jordan’s senior community. To every resident who asked, waited, and believed, this is your moment. Together, we’re building more than a senior center. We’re building a legacy of belonging, connection, and care that will serve our city for generations.
